Silver Diamine Fluoride

Use of silver diamine fluoride in pediatric dentistry can be valuable for our very young patients with extensive decay, or patients who cannot tolerate treatment. SDF is a colorless liquid containing both silver and fluoride ions. It can be used in a non-invasive manner to arrest dental decay. SDF is “painted” on to the cavity with a small brush and flossed in between the teeth when the cavity is in between the teeth. Evaluation and re-application of the SDF is recommended in 1-3 months and it will need to be checked over time to make sure the cavity is still arrested. Even though, SDF is a very conservative way of treating a cavity, any decayed area that the SDF grabs on to turns black. Often, the tooth will require restorative treatment (filling or crown) later in future appointments.
